Fraser Cup is Off and Running

President Peter Reynolds had a few words of wisdom before the start of the playing season for Gangrels.

The three games started thereafter and we soon worked out where to stand when not sweeping and attempting to maintain our social distancing. Despite the restrictions, it was good to be back curling.

Peter Galloway's team wasted no time in picking up form.  They won 6 of the 7 ends against Ken  Ross and finished up by 12 shots to 1.  Impressive stuff!

Francis McCrossin's team also started well. Their game against Peter Reynolds was tied at 3 shots each after 4 ends, but Francis scored 5 shots in the remaining ends to finish comfortably ahead.

The third game, between David Gray and Ronnie Peat, was close.  Ronnie's team  went 4 shots up after 2 ends but then lost the next three to be 7-4 down. They won the next two ends, but only with singles and lost by 7-6 at the close.

The league table is here.

Earlier in the day, Peter Galloway skipped Ronnie Peat, Ernest Mutter and Jimmy Niblock to a close victory over Troon Portland in the first game of the Ross Low Trophy.

We're Curling Again!

The ice rink opened yesterday with a fine Opening Bonspiel and a prizewinning appearance by The Gangrels.

Although we looked a bit like bandits we managed to beat Ayr Country Club by 10 shots to 2 and finished in second place in the first session.  The winners were Galston and Sorn were in third place.

Later in the evening,we had our practice session. Peter Galloway was delighted that there were 13 trying out the conditions before next week.

The first games in the Fraser Cup start next Monday at 5.45 pm and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

End of Season Review

GANGRELS CC 2019/20 END OF SEASON REVIEW

The Club’s Constitution requires an AGM to be held before 31 March each year.  The 2020 AGM was scheduled to be held on Monday 16 March 2020, however, due to social distancing measures introduced by the UK Government as a result of the COVID-19 virus pandemic, that meeting was cancelled at short notice on Sunday 15 March.

In these quite exceptional circumstances and to enable ongoing administration of Club activities, the Committee proposed in the email from Secretary Peter dated 15 March, that a newsletter be composed and distributed which would summarise the business to be conducted under the proposed AGM Agenda originally issued by email on 3 March 2020.  This would keep everyone informed of this season’s achievements and plans for the next and more importantly allow administration of the Club’s activities.  Members were advised that consent to adopt the various reports, proposals and nominations included in the Agenda would be assumed unless notified otherwise.  No notes of any dissension have been received.

While the way ahead for next season is uncertain at the moment, the information herein sets the scene of how things went last season, the changes arising from the AGM and considerations for the next.

The full review with details of Office Bearers Reports is available by clicking here or by looking at the AGM Minutes Page on the right of the website.

Frame Salver Results

The results of the Frame Salver were as follows:

3rd :  J Begg v R Morrison    4-5
2nd:  E Lawrence v A Henry 6-4
1st:   R Charters v B Kennedy 8-3

A good final night which President Richard closed with a short thank you and summary of the season before handing over the Presidency to Peter Reynolds.  He also gave the members present sight of the new Vice President (A Hay) and new members of the committee.  In closing, he said that as the AGM had had to be cancelled due to the current virus protection measures being introduced, the Secretary would work up a summarising newsletter to cover the AGM Agenda Items and distribute it to all members.

Province Knock-Out

Andrew Kerr's report on the Province K/O Final.

Thursday 12th March saw the culmination of this season’s Province Knock Out competition with the current national holders, Stewarton Heather, taking on Gangrels who had taken the scalp of, amongst others, a strong Sorn rink on their march to the final.

The Gangrels underdogs were not fazed up against the reigning champions and it was only in the latter stages of the game that Stewarton managed to put some daylight between the scores. A final result of 6-3 in Stewarton’s favour shows what a very commendable performance was put in by the Gangrels rink skipped by David Hope with Peter Galloway, Ken Ross and Peter Reynolds.

However, it will be the Stewarton Heather rink of David Mundell, Alan Smith, Alex Wilson and Province Vice President Dougie Reid which will represent Ayrshire Province next season in the National Championship at Greenacres.

David and Robert win Pairs Competition

In a very close final, decided by a fraction of an inch, David Gray and Robert Charters beat Robert Boyd and Bob Cherry in the Pairs Competition tonight.

They had won against Peter Kennedy and Ken Ross in their semi - final, with David having some great draw shots.

Robert and Bob had also played well, although they were a trifle fortunate to beat Steel McFadzean and Ernest Mutter in their semi.

Overall it was an excellent night, well organised by our secretary Peter.

Kirkbride Rosebowl Final

A close and entertaining game, according to the  watching audience - President Richard and Secretary Peter.

David Hope's team started well and were three up after two ends, but an unlucky last shot at the third changed a further two to David into two for Bella Kennedy.

Bella was subbing at skip for Euan and never looked back, eventually winning the game by 6 shots to 4.

Congratulations to Bella, Peter Reynolds, Robert Boyd and Gillian Watson.

Kirkbride Semi Finals

Euan Lawrence had Donald Cattenach and Bella Kennedy subbing for him this evening and along with Robert Boyd they had a comfortable victory over Bob Cherry.

In the other semi final, David Haddow subbed for David Hope, and this was a far closer game.
Tied at 3 shots each after 5 ends, a steal of 1 at the 6th end and another 3 at the 7th resulted in victory for David's team, skipped by Ronnie Peat, against Robert Charters.

The final is at 5.00 pm next Monday.

Kirkbride Rosebowl Round 1

There were some very close games tonight and at one point it seemed likely that two of the games would end in ties.  However, Bob Cherry played an immaculate freeze to one of Richard Morrison's stones and won the game by 7 shots to 4.

They were outscored, however, by Robert Charters. He was in sparkling form and had a great victory, by 9 shots to 1, over Jimmy Begg.

The closest game turned out to be that between Euan Lawrence and David Hope. David was two shots down at the last end, but lay two well hidden stones .They were enough to secure a drawn game and both teams qualified for round two.

Next games are next Monday at 5.00pm. (Time changed from 6.00)

Robert Charters will play David Hope and Bob Cherry wll play Euan Lawrence.

The full draw is here.

Gangrels Retain the Wilkie Trophy

Our annual match against Tarbolton was once again a close affair. In President Richard's absence (some excuse about a Caribean Cruise), David Hope skipped his rink of Robert Boyd, Ronnie Peat and Simon Bloomfield. Losing a three at the first end wasn't the best of starts against the Tarbolton rink skippd by Jim Wilson, but they gradually fought back, only to lose another three. Eventually they had to settle for a loss by 8 shots to 5.

Luckily, the other Gangrels Rink was better placed. Peter Reynolds, Peter Galloway, Bob Cherry and Ernest Mutter seemed always to be in control of their game. Their final score was a win by 8 shots to 3, and the final score was 13 - 11 to Gangrels.

Highest Up rink with the Wilkie Trophy
After an excellent meal, Peter Reynolds thanked the Tarbolton players for two good games and celebrated the fact the Gangrels were edging closer to Tarbolton in the overall record

Ronnie Peat wins President'sCup

Ronnie Peat skipped Gordon Todd, Steel McFadzean and David Hope to an 8-4 victory over the second paced team, skipped by George Hay.

President's Cup Winners 2020

It was a closely fought game, with Ronnie 4-3 up after 4 ends. However, a score of 3 at the 5th gave them the lead they protected to the end.

Anne Hay had a good victory, also by 8 shots to 4, over the Euan Lawrence rink, skipped by Peter Reynolds.  Anne, Jim Dunlop, David Gray and Jimmy Begg took second place  and consigned Peter's team to 5th.

In the other game, Francis McCrossin took all the credit for skipping Bob Cherry's rink to their first win, with a 10-5 win over Ernest Mutter.

The final league table is here.

Next Monday at 5.00 is the Points Competition.

President's Cup set for Close Finish

There were two big wins tonight, but League Leaders George Hay suffered in a very close game with Ernest Mutter. Three singles in the first three ends had set things up well for George, but the loss of a 4 at the fourth end was to prove crucial. The Morrison rink took a two at the 5th to regain the lead but lost a single at the 6th. A steal of one by Ernest at the last end won the points for Ronnie Wilson's team and knocked George off the top of the league table.

Back on top of the table are the Hope team, skipped by Ronnie Peat. They had  an 8-1 victory over Peter Reynolds, Euan Lawrence Robert Boyd and Donald Cattenach.

The third game also had a big victory, with Anne Hay continiung her good form for Jimmy Begg's team by winning 9-1 against Francis McCrossin.

The final games are next week. Geroge Hay and Ronnie Peat play each other in a winner takes all game.  The league table can be found here.

A great night for the Hays

George Hay had a great win tonight over Francis McCrossin by 7 shots to 2 to take sole ownership of the topspot in the President's Cup.

In the adjoining rink Anne Hay was also having a great game and built up a 6 -1 lead over Ronnie Peat after 5 ends.  There was a wobble in end 6 when Ronnie took 5 shots to level the game, but Anne played a controlled runback to score the winning shot.

Ernest Mutter also built up a sizable lead over Peter Reynolds, but Peter scored 3 at the last to win by 6 shots to 5.

The league table, here, shows George's Morrison rink unbeaten after 3 games. Following on are two teams on 4 points, two on 2 points and Bob Cherry's team still to break their duck.

Two teams still unbeaten in President's Cup

Current leader Ronnie Peat skipped the Hope rink to an 11-2 victory over Francis McCrossin (Bob Cherry) to remain in first place.

In second place sits the rink of President Richard Morrison.  George Hay is in charge here and he had the distiction of being the first skip to beat the Euan Lawrence combo this season. Seven shots to one ahead after 4 ends, George kept his cool and scored a 4 at the last to win by 11 shots to 3 against Peter Reynolds.

The third game saw a strong finish by Ernest Mutter and the Wilson team.  His team was well down against Anne Hay, by 7 shots to 2.  However, scores of 2 and 5 gave them a 9-7 victory. Commiserations to Anne and her team.  We've all been there!

The latest table can be found here.

President's Cup Week 1

The President's Cup is the competition where skips play lead and everyone else moves up. This works well but usually causes me to get confused when posting results.  I have yet again opted to have the teams described under the normal skips name.   I will try to name the actual skips in the narrative part of the website and if I get it wrong, please excuse me.

The closest game tonight was a narrow 5-4 win by Peter Reynolds, skipping the Euan Lawrence rink, over Francis McCrossin, who skipped the Bob Cherry team.

George Hay skipped the Richard Morrison team to a 9-3 victory over Jimmy Begg.  Not sure who was skipping Jimmy tonight.  The card showed Anne Hay, but she wasn't well so perhaps it was Jim Dunlop.  (Must get our secretary to remind seconds not to prepare cards prior to game, or at least to check that everyone has turned up. Oh wait, Peter was the second in that game!)

In the third game, Ronnie Peat skipped David Hope's team to a 12-0 victory over Ronnie Wilson's team. Ronnie W was away and his third had no luck at all.

The table can be found here.
