Drew Duncan Quaich won by the McCrossin Rink

It was great to see eight Gangrels teams playing for this years's Drew Duncan Quaich tonight.

The Quaich is the competition where players have two ends at each position and then move on.  It made for some very close games.  In fourth place, on +2 shots, was Robert Charters' team of Gordon Todd, Bob Cherry and Ronnie Wilson.  Third on +3 was Willie Scott with Jimmy Niblock, George Hodge and Anne Hay.  In second place at +4 was Ronnie Peat, with Alan Chapman, David Gray and David Hope, but the winners on an astounding +14 shots were the Francis McCrossin team. Francis had Donald Cattanach, Richard Morrison and David Graham.

There followed an excellent three course meal by Lorrie and his team. First class food and quick service. The Christmas Pudding looked a bit lonely, but it was a very large serving dish.

And congratulations to David Gray who braved a trial by fire from Lorrie to ensure that it was just right for serving.

Of course our curling is not yet finished for 2021.  Next Monday is our Points competition.

Details of the draw are:

Ronnie Wilson's Team wins Fraser Cup

Fraser Cup Winners 2021
Peter Galloway, Richard Morrison, Ronnie Wilson (skip), Peter Kennedy

Ronnie Wilson's team were tied at the top with David Gray's as the final round got underway tonight. He knew that he had a lead of a few ends but he must still have had a little bit of concern when he lost the first two ends and saw that David was 4 up at the same time.

They knuckled down, however, and won the next 5 ends, beating Ronnie Peat's team comprehensively by 7 shots to 4.

David Gray built up a good lead and was 7 shots up after 4 ends.  But he was pegged back as Francis won the last 4 ends. The lead was sufficient and David won eventually 7-6.

As you can see from the league table, here, the two front runners finished equal on points, but Ronnie, Peter, Peter and Richard finished comfortably ahead by 6 ends at the finish.

Hearty congratulations to them.

The other game saw Ken Ross beat Peter Reynolds by 9 shots to 4, anf finish in third place.

Next week at 5.15 we play the Drew Duncan Quaich. The teams are shown below and each player will skip for two ends.

One week to go - and then there were two!

Last week's top three became this week's top two when Francis McCrossin's team came up against Team Peat. Losing five at the first end was the wrong start for Francis and, although they scored four at the last, they finished up losing by 10 shots to 6.

Ronnie Wilson and David Gray still share top spot, with 13 points each.  Ronnie stays in top position with a victory over Peter Reynolds by 9 shots to 4, but David is also on that mark. However, he has only won 34 ends to Ronnie's 39. David's team started well with a four at end one but promptly gave up four at end 2. It stayed close against Ken Ross but David finished on top by 8 shots to 7.

Final games in the league are next week. David Gray plays Francis McCrossin.  The two Ronnies go head to head and Ken Ross plays Peter Reynolds.  All to play for!

The league table is here.

It's very close (at the top!)

A win for David Gray over Ronnie Wilson, coupled with a loss for Frances McCrossin leaves the top three teams separated by only one point.

Ronnie Wilson's team remain top of the league with 11 points, but he only leads David by 4 ends. Frances is only one point behind, but has scored two more ends. It promises to be a very close finish, with only two games left.

Ernest Mutter was skipping for Ken Ross and led by 5 shots after 4 ends. Frances fought back to be only one shot behind playing the last, but Ernest held hid nerve to score a single point and win 7-5.

David Gray was also leading by 5 shots, in his case after 5 ends.  Ronnie Wilson scored singles at each of the last three but ultimately also lost 5-7.

Peter Reynolds played solidly and a score of 4 at the 6th end made sure of an 8-2 victory over Ronnie Peat.

The league table can be found here.

Francis's team are on form

We mentioned an 18-1 win for Francis McCrossin last week and he had another excellent performance tonight.  A good start usually helps and Francis scored 4 at the first end against the previously unbeaten Wilson team. He followed that up with scores of 1 at the next three ends before Ronnie scored a shot.

There was no comeback, however, and Frances eventually won 12 -1.

David Gray also started by losing a shot at each of the first three ends.  However, from end 4 onwards he put the foot down and eventuall won by 7 shots to 3.

Ronnie Peat and Ken Ross had a close game.  They were tied at 3 shots each after 3 ends but Ronnie scored 8 more shots against Ken's 4 to win by 11 shots to 7. I really must repeat that.  Ronnie's team won by 11 shots to 7.

Hallelujah!  The table is here.

Ronnie Wilson now 3 points clear at the top

Francis didn't want to be the headline tonight so we'll continue to highlight the league leader Ronnie Wilson.  Ronnie's team have only dropped one point and continued to impress with a 9-4 victory over Ken Ross.

Ronnie Peat's team contimue not to impress and stay on zero points, having been well beaten by David Gray.

Oh, and Francis won by18 shots to one against Peter Reynolds.

The league table can be found here.

Ronnie Wilson's Unbeaten Run Continues

League leader Ronnie Wilson continued his run of form, beating bottom team Ronnie Peat by 13 points to 8 in a high scoring game. Tied 3 all after 3 ends Ronnie (W) then scored 3, 4 and 5.  Briefly pegged back when Ronnie (P) took a 5 at the next end, Ronnie (W) held on easily to win.

Second place is still held by Ken Ross, whose team scored well to beat Peter Reynolds by 12 shots to 6.

The thrid game was indeed a close finish. Francis was leading by 8 shots to 4, playing the last end. Unfortunately he lost 5 shots and the game by 9-8.

The league table is here.

Ronnie Wilson's Team still Leading

Week 4 of this year's Fraser Cup saw Ronnie Wilson's team continue their unbeaten run. It was fairly close, though. Jim Dunlop was skipping for Peter Reynolds and was level at 5 shots all starting the last end.  Ronnie had the last stone and it was enough to score the winning shot.

Francis McCrossin's rink are chasing hard. They were 7 shots up on Ronnie Peat's team before losing a two. Scores of 3 and 2 at the next two ends resulted in a comfortable win by 12 shots to 2.  Ronnie was unavailable for comment when we tried to speak to him later, but acknowledged they were well beaten.

The third game saw Ken Ross score in 5 ends in a well crafted 6-2 victory

The league table is here.

Week 3 - Fraser Cup

Ronnie Wilson's team had a great start to their game, winning the first 4 ends to lead by 6 shots.  David Gray then staged a comeback by winning three of the next four ends, finishing down by 7 shots to 4.  However, Ronnie is now the only unbeaten team and leads the league on 5 points.

One point behind is Francis McCrossin. Francis and his team also had a great start and they were 8 shots to the good before Ken Ross staged his fightback. Ken scored 8 shots in the second half of the game, but lost a 5 in end 7, leaving Francis the winner 13-8.

Ronnie Peat and Peter Reynolds had a close and well fought game with Peter scoring a 4 at the sixth end to finish up leading 7-6 at the conclusion.

Fraser Cup - It's Close at the Top

We now have three teams tied at the top after two games.  Ronnie Wilson, David Gray and Ken Ross all have three points out of four and are only separated by ends.

Ronnie Wilson had a comfortable victory over Jimmy Niblock, who was skipping for Francis McCrossin's team. David Gray finished tied at 5-5 with Peter Reynolds and Ken Ross beat Ronnie Peat by 10 shots to 4.

The league Table, which is here, shows David Gray's team now on top - because of a slightly better ends against record.

Jim Lyburn opens the New Season

Honorary President Jim Lyburn started the new season with an almost perfect draw.

Earlier, President Peter Reynolds had welcomed everyone back on the ice again and the assembled company were then "raring to go".

The ice, which had been very keen last week, was unfortunately a bit slow, but it did not detract from  some hard fought games.

Setting the early pace is the rink skipped by Francis McCrossin who scored two fives in their 12-5 win over Peter Reynolds team.

David Gray was also in good form and his team played solidly in winning by 6 shots to 3 over Ronnie Peat.

Ronnie Wilson and Ken Ross shared the points at 7 all and we think they had 4 ends each. It's only natural that seconds will take a littkle while to remember how to count!

The league table can be found by clicking here or on the Results Tab.

Afterwards 20 of us had an excellent meal from new chef Lorrie Headley.

The fish platter went down a treat.
