Drew Duncan Quaich Results

The Drew Duncan Quaich was back in its usual spot before Christmas and it provided an exceptionally close result.

President Richard and his team of George Hay, Peter Galloway and Jimmy Niblock took 3s at the 3rd and 4th ends to build up a sizeable lead and eventually finished up by 8 shots, beating Bob Cherry's rink 11-3.

On the adjacent rink David Hope's team of Ronnie Peat and Gordon Todd (Steel was AWOL playing for Kirkoswald on sheet 1) were struggling against Ronnie Wilson. After 5 ends they were  down by seven shots to 4, but a 7 at the 6th end and steals of 2 twos thereafter meant a final score of 15-7 and another win by 8 shots.

The third game was the clash between Euan Lawrence and Jimmy Begg, the top two teams in the Frame Salver.  Euan was scoring in the odd ends and Jimmy in the even ends, but Euan had two fours and a three, while Jimmy had two singles and a two.  The final score to Euan, Peter Reynolds, Robert Boyd and Gillian Watson was 13-4, up by 9 shots and just pipping the other winners.

Congratulations (yawn!) again to Euan and his team.

Fraser Cup - Final Games

Tonight saw the final games of the Fraser Cup. Euan Lawrence and his team of Gillian Watson, Robert Boyd and Peter Reynolds had already secured the trophy last week, but tonight they were against their closest challengers and a certain amount of pride was at stake  Could Euan remain unbeaten or would Jimmy get some revenge for losing to the leaders in their earlier game?

It was certainly a close game with the scores tied at 4 shots all at the start of the final end.  Euan had the last stone and scored a single to win 5-4 and finish the season with 19 points out of 20 - a fantastic performance.

Elsewhere, David Hope beat Richard Morrison by 8 shots to 5 to remain in third place and Ronnie Wilson skipped the Charters team to a 10-5 victory over Bob Cherry.

The final table is here.

Our games next Monday will be for the Drew Duncan Quaich at 5.00 pm.
This is played over 8 ends with each player taking a turn at skipping for two ends.
The order of play is the finishing order of the Fraser Cup and the games are thus:

Euan Lawrence  v  Jimmy Begg (again!)
David Hope        v   Robert Charters
Bob Cherry        v   Richard Morrison

Good wins for Euan, David and Richard

Euan Lawrence and his team of Robert Boyd, Donald Cattenach (S) and Gillian Watson continued their winning ways with a 14-3 victory over Ernest Mutter, skipping the Charters team. We can't say that he's won the league yet, but it's getting close - 4 points and 7 ends ahead of his nearest challenger Jimmy Begg with only two games left to play.

Jimmy had a fairly close game against David Hope, but David pulled away in the second half to win by 10 shots to 5.

Fresh from a week in Portugal, Richard Morrison gained his first win of the season by beating Bob Cherry 6-5 in a close game.

The leage table can be found here.

The Top of the League becomes a little tighter

Euan Lawrence's team are still unbeaten but they had to come from behind to snatch a draw against Richard Morrison. Richard's team led by 4 after two ends but were pegged back. They led again at the last but Euan took a one and the game finished tied at 6 shots each.

Jimmy Begg's team kept up the pressure at the top by beating Ronnie Wilson. skipping for the Charters team, by 7 shots to 3.

Moving up to third place were David Hope's team, who scored a 6 at the 6th end and beat Bob Cherry by 9 shots to 4.

The league table is here.

The Top Two continue their winning ways.

There were three big wins tonight.  Ewan Lawrence and his high powered team were in no mood to slacken against Bob Cherry's team, skipped by Francis McCrossin. They started with two threes and eventually won by 11 shots to 2 to keep their 100% record.

Jimmy Begg's team is also high powered, and they took no prisoners in a 14 shots to 2 victory over President Richard Morrison.

The third game was between David Hope and Robert Charters, who were skipped by Ronnie Wilson tonight.  Ronnie was ahead by 2 shots to1 after three ends, but the Hope team found form to win eventually by 11 shots to 2.

Match with Beresford Ladies

Thanks To Peter Galloway for the following report.

" The Gangrels and Beresford Ladies amalgamated Rinks met last night for the annual get together which was an enjoyable, social and spirited occasion and culminated in 18 sitting down to dine together afterwards.  Peter Reynolds' Vice Pres Rink of Joanne Ferguson, Ronnie Wilson and Isla Robison was the winner overall.  President Trisha thanked all the players and hoped that everyone had had fun.  President Richard added that there had been close results, but not for him, and suggested that Beresford Ladies and Gangrels join forces to keep playing standards and numbers high!  He concluded by thanking Beresford Ladies for arranging the evening and Limekiln caterers for the good food and service enjoyed by all.  Peter Reynolds thanked his Rink for their contributions to their win and said that he thought they were superb!"

Fraser Cup - Halfway Point

Five games played and five games to go.  Setting the pace is Euan Lawrence's team who had a convincing 13 - 2 victory over their closest rival Jimmy Begg. Five games played and five games won.  Will they continue their good form in the second half?  Time will tell!

Ronnie Wilson skipped Robert Charters' team to a 9-5 victory over Bob Cherry, who were skipped by Francis McCrossin.

At the lower end of the table, David Hope's team recorded their first victory, beating Richard Morrison by 9 shots to 1. Starring for David's team was Steel McFadzean, resplendent after a successful day at the races. New uniform for the club?

Jimmy and Euan are still unbeaten - but Euan now a point ahead.

Top of the league Euan Lawrence, with his team of Peter Reynolds, Robert Boyd and Gillian Watson, secured another impressive victory over David Hope's team tonight.  David was certainly missed but Euan's team didn't miss much in a 16 shots to 2 victory.

Second place Jimmy Begg had to work harder, coming back from 5 shots down to Bob Cherry after 3 ends to secure a 6-6 draw.

The third game was close for a while. Robert Charters was 4-2 up after 4 ends, but he pulled ahead to win comfortably by 9 shots to 2 at the finish.

The league table is here.

In the third game Bob Cherry had an 8-1 victory over George Hay, skipping for Richard Morrison's rink.

Fraser Cup - Week 2

Jimmy Begg and his team of Anne Hay, Jim Dunlop and David Gray had a 14-3 victory over Robert Charters team tonight to take top position in the league.  Mind you, he's only one end better than Euan Lawrence's team.  They started well and were 8-1 up after three ends, but settled for a 9-5 victory over Richard Morrison at the close.

The third game was very close. Tied at 4 shots all after 6 ends, Bob Cherry took a two at the last to win an enjoyable game.

Can you spot the Gangrel?

Thanks to Gillian Watson who has sent us an old photo of The Gangrels.  As you probably know, Gillian is the daughter of John Watson, one of the original "Boys Rink" who founded our club in February 1940.

The date is not known, but we can see a few weel kent faces, just a wee bit younger than they look today.

How many can you spot and can anyone guess the year? Click on the photo to expand.

And We're Off!

The new Season has started.  The Gangrels assembled again for the usual pre-first game picture and it looks quite good this year.  Please click on the pcture to enlarge.

Everyone was ready for the new season and President Richard prepared to deliver the first stone.

If he plays many stones as well as he threw the first one, he'll have an excellent season!

In his first game, however, he was up against Jimmy Begg and Jimmy soon established a 6-1 lead.  Richard fought back and needed a 2 at the last end to peel.  He was lying the shots when Jimmy came to play his last stone and despite George Hay's power sweeping, it stayed at the back of the four foot to give up a one to Richard and win the game 6-5.

Euan Lawrence's team of Gillian Watson, Robert Boyd and Peter Reynolds was three two down after four ends against Bob Cherry, but scored 4, 3 and 2 to win by a comforable 11 shots to 3 , and go top of the table.

In the third game, David Hope and Robert Charters had a very close game, with Robert stealing a 2 at the last to win by one shot.

The league table is here.

Next week we are bck to our usual 5.00 clock time.

Frame Salver and A.G.M. 2019

Winners of last night's Frame Salver with a plus 9 score, were Richard Morrison, Euan Lawrence, George Hay and Gordon Todd.

After the game, we had an excellent meal and we gave a hearty thank you to Stephen of Limekiln Caterers for his special menu.

Some of us were thinking that the committee had some bad news for us, when we saw them preparing for the AGM.

But it turned out that they were only concerned that Ronnie Wilson had said he was going to amend the subscription rate. What they didn't know was that it was a reduction! (for non mother club members).

Full minutes of the AGM can be found here or by clicking the AGM Minutes page, but our new Office Bearers are:

Honorary President   Jim Lyburn
President                   Richard Morrison
Vice President           Peter Reynolds
Secretary                   Peter Galloway
Treasurer                   Ronnie Wilson
Match Secretary        Ken Ross.

Our four committee members continue as Anne Hay, David Gray, Jimmy Niblock and Robert Charters.

Subscriptions (including RCCC) continues at £43.
                       (without RCCC)       reduces to £23
                         Non Playing        continues at £10.

The highlight of Ken Ross's Match Secretary report was of course the promotion of the Gangrels 2 Day League Team of Peter Galloway, Euan Lawrence, Richard Morrison and Steel McFadzean from Day League 2 to Day League 1. We believe that this is the first time that two teams from one club will play in the top division.

Next year we will again field 6 teams on a Monday night and we have 9 reserves at present.
The skips will be

Richard Morrison
Euan Lawrence
Jimmy Begg
Bob Cherry
Robert Charters
David Hope

Steel McFadzean's rink wins Rosebowl

Steel McFadzeans's Rink of Jimmy Begg, George Hay and Peter Reynolds won last night's final of the Kirkbride Rose Bowl.

They took the first end and kept scoring consistently and by the fifth end they were  5-1 ahead.

Richard Morrison's scratch Rink of Peter Galloway, Ernest Mutter and Allan Chapman then managed to take a 3 in the 6th end to close the gap to 5-4 but in the last 2 ends, Steel took another 3 to close the game at 8-4.

Richard Morrison's team progress to Kirkbride Final

David Hope skipped Richard's team to a convincing win over Peter Kennedy's rink in tonight's Kirkbride Rosebowl Semi Final.

David had Robert Boyd, Alan Chapman and Donald Cattanach to help build an early lead with a 4 at the second end.  Peter Kennedy's rink of Ronnie Peat, Ronnie Wilson and Peter Galloway fought back to lead by 6  shots to 4 after 5 ends, but scores of 4 and 3 at the next two ends were enough for victory.

The winners play next Monday at 6.00 against Steel McFadzean.in the Final. It should be a good game.

Annual Match v Tarbolton

Thanks to Secretary Peter for the following report.

"We met Tarbolton last night in the annual round for the Wilkie Trophy.  It did not start well as both of our Rinks were, initially, 1 man short despite my sending out a reminder to all concerned a week before hand.  Phone calls resulted in us recovering 1 person before the penalty time could be applied.  Tarbolton too were 1 man short for half the game.

Peter Kennedy, David Hope and Willie Scott were 3-1 down by the 4th end but then took a 4 followed by another 2 in the last end to win 7-4 (Peel if penalty points applied).  Ernest Mutter, Jim Lyburn, myself and Donald Cattanach were 6-2 up by the fifth end and despite a come back by Tarbolton in the 7th end, eventually shook hands with a win of 9-4.

An enjoyable meal concluded the evening with Peter K retaining the Wilkie Trophy for another year."

Kirkbride Rosebowl Round 1

It was described by Ken Ross as "the greatest comeback since Lazarus".  It was certainly a game of two Halves. Austin Thomson was skipping the Robert Charters rink against Richard Morrison and they seemed quite comfortable, leading by 7 shots to 1 after 4 ends. The last four ends saw a remarkable comeback, with scores of 5,2,1 and 3 for Richard's team, to finish 12-7 up.

On sheet 6 Steel McFadzean's team had an iron grip on the game, leading 7-0 after 6 ends and conceding 2 at the last to Francis McCrossin.

Meanwhile, Peter Kennedy and Jimmy Niblock were playing a different sort of game with singles being shared in each of the first 6 ends and the score tied at 3 all.  A final score of 2 shots stolen by Peter Kennedy decided the game.

Next week sees the semi final, where Richard Morrison plays Peter Kennedy. The winner will play Steel McFadzean in the final in two weeks time.  It was decided that the ranking should be shots up, then ends and then shots scored.

Our annual match against Tarbolton will be played this Thursday at 5.00 pm.

Peter Kennedy wins President's Cup

President Peter Kennedy only managed one game in the President's Cup but his team held onto win the trophy - just!

Ronnie Wilson skipped Peter Galloway, super sub Bella Kennedy and Ronnie Peat to an extremely tight  6-5 win over Steel McFadzean's team, skipped by Jimmy Begg.

Bob Cherry has been skipping the Niblock rink to 3 wins out of 4 so far, but they were well beaten by Austin Thompson, who skipped the Charters rink to a 10-1 victory.

David Hope was skipping for Richard Morrison and beat Eaun Lawrence by 7 shots to 3.

President's Cup very close and Day League A Team

Tonight saw wins for Richard Morrison, Steel McFadzean and Peter Kennedy. Those wishing a close finish have been rewarded. We now have three teams with 6 points and one team with 4. And guess what, next week they all play against each other.  It could not be closer. Check the table here.

David Hope skipped Richard's team to a 6-5 win over Bob Cherry. Jimmy Begg skipped Steel's team to a 9-4 victory over Euan Lawrence, and Ronnie Wilson skipped Peter Kennedy's team to an 11-3 win against Austin Thomson.

We were delighted last week to announce promotion from Day League B to A for our B league team and this week we're even more delighted to confirm that we'll have two Gangrels teams in the top flight.

Ronnie Peat, Jimmy Begg, Jim Dunlop and Ken Ross beat Troon Portland's Andrew Kerr by 9 shots to 2, a result that saw them finish in 3rd place in a highly competitive league.

President's Cup and Day League B Team

The third week of the President's Cup saw Bob Cherry skip the Jimmy Niblock team with Anne Hay and Ernest Mutter to a 7-5 victory over Peter Kennedy. Peter had his first foray on ice after his injury. Good to see our President back on his feet. Team Niblock are the only unbeaten rink this year and top the table with 6 points.

Close behind on 4 points are Robert Charters, who had a 7-2 win over David Gray, and Steel McFadzean, who beat Richard Morrison by 8 shots to 6.

The table is here.

Yesterday also saw a win for our Day League B team.  Euan Lawrence, Richard Morrison, Peter Galloway and Steel McFadzean have played 7 games in the B division, winning six and drawing one.  They finished unbeaten and will feature in Division A next year.  Hearty congratulations to the four team members and the various subs who all contributed.

President's Cup - Week 2

Biggest winner of the night was Jimmy Niblock's team who were ably skipped by Bob Cherry to an 11-3 victory over Steel McFadzean.

Robert Charters team, under the captaincy of Austin Thomson, also had a good win over Richard Morrison, by 8 shots to 3.

The third match was very close. Peter Galloway was skipping the Peter Kennedy rink against the David Gray team, with Euan Lawrence in charge. Euan was 5-2 up after 5 ends but scores of 1, 1, and 2 saw Peter sneak a lucky win by one shot, 6-5.

The table can be found here.

Start of President's Cup Competition

Monday saw the start of this year's President's Cup.  The Cup is the competition where skips move down to lead and everyone else moves up.  For ease of communication I shall use the original skip's name to identify the team.  On occasion I might mention who is actually skipping but please don't moan if I forget!

The first games saw wins for the teams of Jimmy Niblock, Steel McFadzean and Peter Kennedy. The resulting table is fairly close and can be found by clicking here.

Skips for the first game were:

Rink 1 - Ronnie Wilson                                     Rink 4 - Bob Cherry
Rink 2 - David Hope                                          Rink 5 - Austin Thomson
Rink 3 - Francis McCrossin                               Rink 6 - Jimmy Begg

Annual Match V Ayr & Alloway

Our match against Ayr & Alloway resulted in a good win for the Gangrels.  Robert Boyd and his team of Peter Reynolds. Peter Galloway and Gordon Todd started well by taking a 4 at the first end and finished well too with a final score of 13 -3 in our favour.

In the second game, Gangrels didn't start quite so well, losing two shots, but Richard Morrison and fellow team members Ronnie Peat, Bob Cherry and Francis McCrossin took control at the second end by scoring 5 shots. The final score there was even better, at 14 - 4.

Peter Kennedy and Alistair Tyre for A & A spoke eloquently (and briefly) afterwards.

Drew Duncan Quaich

2019 - A New Year and a new time to play the Drew Duncan Quaich. It was good to have a bonspiel format for the competition, where everyone has a couple of ends to try their luck at skipping.

The team who were the best on the night was David Gray, with Jim Nelson, Francis McCrossin and Gordon Todd.  They finished 7 shots up, having beaten Steel McFadzean by 11-4.

In second place was Jimmy Niblock who beat Jim Dunlop by 9 shots to 5. Third was Peter Kennedy's rink who had a close game against Richard Morrison, winning by 7 shots to 5.
