Peter Kennedy's rink wins Fraser Cup

Despite missing Peter's positive vibes from the gallery. his rink won a close contest against the Robert Charters rink tonight. Ronnie Peat, Ronnie Wilson, Bella Kennedy and Peter Galloway beat Willie Scott, Jim Lyburn, Jennifer Mutter and Harry Peters by 9 shots to 3 and thus move to 14 points from 9 games.

Richard Morrison's rink also won a close game against Jimmy Niblock to move to 12 points, two behind Peter's, but being 12 ends behind overall, they will not be able to overtake them.

The third game was an 8-5 win for David Gray's team against Steel McFadzean.

Next week is the Final game in the Fraser Cup and after the break for Christmas we resume with  the Drew Duncan Quaich on Monday 7th January at 5.00 pm.

Fraser Cup Week 8

With two more weeks left after tonight, things are becoming a little clearer in the league. Still top after a 13-4 victory over Jimmy Niblock, were Peter Kennedy's rink.  Peter was doing his bit "behind the glass" and Ronnie Peat and the team were absorbing his vibes on the ice.

Richard Morrison was behind by two shots with two ends to play to Steel McFadzean but scored a four and a single to win a close game by 9 shots to 6.

In the third game, Jim Dunlop was two down with three ends remaining but scores of 4, 2 and 1 left his team 5 shots ahead at the end.

The latest table is here.

Fraser Cup Latest

Richard Morrison and his team continued their good run of form by beating the Robert Charters rink, skipped by Jim Dunlop. The game was tied at 5 shots each after 5 ends.  Jim took one at the 6th but Richard replied with a 3 to win by 8 shots to 6.

Jimmy Begg took over the skipping duties in Steel's absence and had a strong win over Jimmy Niblock by 10 shots to 2.

It was nice to see President Peter Kennedy showing off his space age boot.  Hopefully the boot is helping Peter quickly back to full fitness .  His team, skipped by Ronnie Peat, obviously took heart being watched over by Peter and had a good win over David Gray, the score being 10 shots to 1.

The updated table is here.

Week 6 of Fraser Cup.

It's all getting very tight at the top of the league.  Richard Morrison had an excellent 12 -5 victory over Ronnie Peat, skipping the leading Peter Kennedy rink.

Jimmy Niblock had the comeback of the night.  Having lost two 3s in the first three ends against David Gray, he then took seven shots in the next four ends to win by 8 shots to 7.

Steel McFadzean also had a difficult start. He found himself 9 shots down after 5 ends but came back to reduce the deficit to 9-4 by the end.

You will see from the table that there are two teams tied on 8 points and three tied on 6. All to play for!

An enjoyable and closely fought Points Competition was won by Euan Lawrence, who finished on 28 points for 7 of the disciplines played.  Euan was one point ahead of Bob Cherry and Ronnie Peat, who you may remember were tied in first place last year.

Thanks go to our stalwart scorers, Peter Reynolds, Ken Ross, David Gray and Bob Cherry, and to our Secretary Peter Galloway, and congratulations to Euan.

Fraser Cup Week 4

There were three close games in this week's Fraser Cup.  Top position is taken by Peter Kennedy's team who held on at the last end to only lose a two and win the game against Jim Dunlop by 8 shots to 7.  The two crocks, Peters Kennedy and Galloway ( I don't often get a chance to call people that in print - only a joke!) were ably replaced by subs Bella Kennedy and Jim Nelson.

Second place in the league, also with 6 points, is the David Gray rink , who scored three shots at the last end to beat Steel McFadzean by 10 shots to 5.

Jimmy Niblock's team didn't start too well against Richard Morrison, losing the first three ends by 5 shots.  A three at the third started the fight back and the second half of the game went the Niblock way, eventually winning by 7 shots to 5.

The league table is here.

And I hope the two Peters are back on the ice soon!

Fraser Cup Latest

Wins for Steel McFadzean, Peter Kennedy and Robert Charters tonight mean that everybody has won at least one game and everybody has lost at least one game.  In other words, it's still quite close.

Jim Dunlop is skipping the Charters team and leads the table on 14 ends, followed by the Kennedy and Gray rinks. All have 4 points.

The teams on 2 points are Jimmy Niblock, Richard Morrison and Steel McFadzean.

The table is here.

Fraser Cup - Week 2

David Gray and his team had a 6-2 win over Peter Kennedy's team to take an early lead in this year's competition.  They are the only team to have won both their opening games.

There are four teams on two points, Robert Charters, Jimmy Niblock, Peter Kennedy and Richard Morrison.  Jimmy Niblock built an early four shot lead and just held on to beat Steel McFadzean by 6-5.

In the other game David Hope (skipping for Richard Morrison) came back from four shots down to beat Jim Dunlop (skipping for Robert Charters) by 6-5.

The table is here.

Presidents to the fore!

It was always going to be risky putting Gillian MacDonald and Peter Kennedy in the same team in the annual game with Beresford Ladies. However, they seemed to gel.

Along with Jimmy Begg and  Helen Roberts they started with  4 shots at the first end and never looked back, eventually winning by 10 shots to 6 against Richard Morrison's rink.

Rena Bain skipped her rink to a 7-5 victory over Jim Dunlop, while Euan Lawrence's team beat Ronnie Peat's by one shot.

An enjoyable occasion, as always, with dinner and chat afterwards.  (Apologies for the poor picture quality).

First Games in Fraser Cup

Our new season got underway at 5.00 tonight with the first games in the Fraser Cup.

Our Honorary President, Jim Lyburn, threw an excellent first stone to start the games.  It was so good that he's been asked to sub next Monday.  Great to have you back playing, Jim.

Rushing straight to the top of the league was Robert Charters team.  Ably skipped by Jim Dunlop, they raced to an 8-0 lead, before Steel McFadzean managed to score three shots at the last.

President Peter Kennedy was part of an exceptionally close game against Richard Morrison. Richard scored 3 at the first end and 2 at the last, but in the ends between these, Peter scored six shots.

Also getting off to a winning start was David Gray's team, who took a single shot at the last to beat Jimmy Niblock by 8 shots to 7.

The league table is here.

Last Friday, Gangrels held a social event, a dinner for members and partners, at the Horizon Hotel. It was a great success, with 25 attendees. The food was first class and the evening seems to have been enjoyed by all. Congratulations for Peter Kennedy, the committee and particularly for  our Secretary, Peter Galloway, for a first class event.

Kirkbride Rosebowl Final

Having let his trusty lieutenant Jimmy Niblock guide his team though the early rounds of the Kirkbride Rosebowl, Richard Morrison returned to lead them to victory over Robert Boyd's team.

After 5 ends the Morrison team lead by three shots to two, but scores of two and then three at ends 6 and 7 secured the win.

Congratulations to Richard, Robert Charters, David Gray and Bill Inglis on a great performance.

Annual Match v Tarbolton

The Wilkie Trophy is awarded annually for the game between Gangrels and Tarbolton. Over the 15 or so years that the game has been played, Tarbolton have featured far more regularly in the engraved winners than Gangrels, so it's great to report that this year the Gangrels won.

Our team of Ernest Mutter, Peter Galloway, David Hope and Jimmy Niblock had a very close game, losing a two at the last end to finish down by 6 shots to 5.

The other team of Ronnie Peat, Robert Boyd, David Gray and Willie Scott had an equally close game.  However, they managed to score 4 shots, in a well controlled last end, to finish winners by 9 shots to 5.

Kirkbride Rosebowl

A busy night for Gangrels, with the preliminary round of the Province Knockout competition being played at the same time as the first round games in the Kirkbride Rosebowl.

I huge thank you to all those who assisted by filling in where team members were required to play against Crosshill - unfortunately this problem will not arise in future because we were up against a strong team and finished a clear second.

In the Kirkbride, Robert Boyd finished 9 shots up and claimed the direct route to the final on 26th February.

The two semi finalists will be the teams skipped by Richard Morrison and Peter Reynolds.

The draw is here.

Euan Lawrence wins President's Cup

Euan skipped Peter Reynolds' rink to a convincing 10-3 victory over Peter Kennedy's rink, skipped by Jimmy Begg.  They therefore finished top of the league table with 8 points out of 10.

Both the other games finished in 6-6 draws, which means that Robert Boyd finished second and Peter Kennedy third.

The final table can be found here.

Next Monday at 5.00 is the first round of the Kirkbride Rosebowl.

The draw can be found here or by clicking on the Competition Results link at top of page.

One Week remains and it's Now Very Close

Peter Kennedy's unbeaten run was brought to a halt by Robert Boyd's team, who won by 6 shots to 5. Also winning tonight was Peter Reynolds who beat David Gray in a close game by 10 shots to 9.
The remaining game saw Ernest Mutter recording his first victory, over Richard Morrison's rink, by 12 shots to 9.

With one week left in the President's Cup any one of three teams can win.  Next week Peter Kennedy plays Peter Reynolds.  They are both on 6 points, but also on 6 is Robert Boyd.  Any one of the three could triumph.

The remaining teams are all on two points. They will be just as keen to win and avoid the bottom place.

The league table is here.

Peter Kennedy's team win three in a row

Jimmy Begg skipped Peter Kennedy's rink to a 10 - 2 victory over David Gray's rink.

In the other games, Robert Boyd's team, skipped by Bob Cherry, beat President Ernest's rink by 10 shots to 2, and Euan Lawrence skipped Peter Reynolds rink, winning by 9 shots to 4.

The league table shows the Kennedy rink on top, the Mutter rink at the bottom and the middle 4 teams all having the same number of ends scored. It could be a close competition.

Gangrels win Ayrshire Province Medal (plus President's Cup Results)

The Gangrels took part in the Province Medal on Tuesday. the first rink comprised of Skip Robert Boyd, Peter Galloway, Bob Cherry and Ken Ross. This rink were playing against Crosshill skipped by Andrew Baird. Under Roberts guidance they began to put their stamp on the game with a win in the first end. There was mixed fortunes in the next few ends with the Gangrels losing 2 shots in the last end to leave us +2 at the end of the game.

The following game was against the Country Club skipped by Bella Kennedy. The rink this time was skipped by Euan Lawrence, David Gray, Ronnie Wilson and David Hope. The first end was to set the game up for the Gangrels with a 3 shot win. However the Country Club came back fighting and with some lucky touches they were able to win a number of ends. However we left the best for the last end where we had the hammer. With last stone to play and lying 5 shot's we were going for 6. Euan played his stone but unfortunately it drew more than anticipated and hit an opposition stone into the house and cut our margin to 4 shots. We finished the game +7. We were not to know how critical this last shot was to be until Billy Howat, Province President, made his speech. Billy was pleased to advise that one Club had a winning Score of +9 and this Club was the Gangrels. Thanks to all those who played in this competition to record this fabulous victory - and thanks to David Hope for the report.

In tonight's President's Cup, Peter Kennedy's rink continued their winning ways with a 6-3 victory over Richard Morrison.  David Gray won by 6 shots to 2 over Robert Boyd's team and Peter Reynolds had an 8-3 win over Ernest Mutter.

As you can see here, Peter's rink is on 4 points, Ernest on nil and the other four teams are on two - separated only by a couple of ends.

President's Cup is Underway

Performance of the year so far is from George Hodge who skipped Peter Kennedy's team to a 12 -1 victory over Ernest Mutter, skipped by Austin Thomson.

Bob Cherry scored 5 shots in the last 4 ends to beat Euan Lawrence by one shot and Jimmy Niblock beat Robert Charters by 7 shots to 5 in a good well-fought encounter.

The league table can be found here.
