Fraser Cup - Halfway Stage

Five games played, five still to play and leading the way is Robert Boyd with 8 points out of 10. Tonight he had a good victory over Richard Morrison, winning by 12 shots to 3.

Peter Reynolds and Peter Kennedy had a close game, with Peter Kennedy being 4-3 up after 5 ends. However,  Peter Reynolds took a three and stole a three to win by 9 shots to 4.

Also having a close game were David Gray and Ernest Mutter. Ernest played a great stone with his last to lie game, but David, trailing by one shot at the final end, also played a great last stone to take out Ernest's for a two and the win.

So Robert has 8 points, but three teams are only two behind on 6 points. The second half promises to be exciting!

Eglinton Jug, Province Knock Out and Week 4 games

Last week was Jug Week. The competition has been played since 1851 and this year the Gangrels were represented by two teams.

Firstly, lets hear from Ernest, who has given this report on Team A

"Rink A skipped by Euan Lawrence with Jimmy Begg, Ernest Mutter and Francis McCrossin successfully progressed to the last 16 on Thursday morning after defeating an Ayr and Alloway rink. The Thursday match was played on the fastest ice any on the players could remember with virtually no sweeping involved. Unfortunately our opponents were the Fairywell rink skipped by Sean Rennie with Liam Scott, George McNaughton and Eilene Rennie. It appeared as if the combined age of the 3 youngest members of that team was less than the single age of  a couple of our rink. For this game Donald Cattanach replaced Francis.

Unfortunately age and experience was out-weighed by ability and hands were shaken after 7 ends with the Gangrels coming second. Fairywell lost in the quarter finals after going into the last end with a 2 shot lead and losing a three."

Rink B was skipped by Ronnie Peat, with Peter Galloway, Jim Dunlop and Ken Ross. Our first game was against Auchenames  and we had a convincing 13-2 victory.  Ken then departed and left the task of leading in the capable hands of Steell McFadzean.

Our first game on Thursday was a hard fought victory over Gemmell Jack's Dundonald team.  Every end was tight but we eventually won 7-1.

The quarter finals were later that day, against Stewarton Heather, skipped by Craig Reid.  This was the hardest test so far. We fought well and kept close to the hard hitting S H  team. One shot behind at the last end seemed not a bad position, but somehow our skip failed to draw the button to force an extra end. It really was quite a difficult shot - honest!

All the Jug results can be found here.

Finally, another report from Ernest. This time of the excellent performance in the Province Knock Out.

"Having won in earlier rounds against Dalmellington and Ayr and Alloway the Gangrels rink of Ernest, Jimmy Begg, David Hope and Jim Dunlop met Crosshill (Robert Ireland, Bert Andrew, Russell Boyd and Alex Connell) in the final. Gangrels got off to a good start stealing a 2 in the first end.

After 7 ends the match was tied at 5 all with Gangrels having won 4 ends, including the seventh leaving Crosshill with the hammer in the last end. With the final stone of each skip to be played Crosshill were lying shot with Gangrels having 2 stones touching at the front of the house. Unfortunately Skip Ernest missed the take out leaving Crosshill the victors.

The finals are scheduled for Greenacres from 10 - 12 November."

Fraser Cup Week 4

Robert Boyd and Ernest Mutter continue to lead the way in this year's Fraser Cup. They each have 6 points from 4 games, winning tonight against Richard Morrison and Peter Kennedy respectively.
The other winner was Peter Reynolds who had a comprehensive 12-4 victory over David Gray.

Fraser Cup - Week 3

Some interesting games tonight.  Ernest Mutter and Robert Boyd had a very close game, resolved only by a measure at the last end with Ernest winning by 5 shots to 4.

Robert Charters was skipping David Gray's team and was 7 shots up after three ends. However, Jimmy Begg fought back by scoring 7 shots in the next three ends. Robert held on to score two in the final end, winning 9-7.

Peter Reynolds also had a great start, leading by 8 shots to 2 after three ends. He didn't score again but held on to win 8-6.

The table can be found here.

Week 2 - The First Stone!

We were delighted to have Honorary President Jim Lyburn with us tonight to throw the opening stone. Also great to see that our President Ernest Mutter had returned from his trip to Hong Kong and said a few words of welcome to the assembled club.

Jim's stone was a foretaste of many this evening (certainly a few of mine) - looked spot on for much of its journey, but kept on going just a bit too far.

Top of the league after this evening's games are Robert Boyd's team with two wins so far. At the other end, Peter Reynolds has still to break his duck, while everyone else is somewhere in between.

The table is here.

First Games - New Season

The season started this evening at 8.45 pm, a time that precluded the traditional  Opening Stone Ceremony and meal after our game.  Panic not, however, the ceremony and meal will take place next Monday night, 9th October, when we revert to our usual times. Please be there for a prompt start.

The later timing did not spoil the quality of the games and there were wins for David Gray, Robert Boyd and Peter Kennedy. Peter obviously has decided this year to save his energy.  He managed to win by 11 shots to 6, despite only taking three of the seven ends played.

The league table is available by clicking here, or on the Fraser Cup tab, top right.
