Drew Duncan Quaich

The winning team in this year's Drew Duncan Quaich was skipped for two ends by Richard Morrison. The other skips, who each took charge for two ends, were Jimmy Niblock, David Hope and Jim Dunlop.  David and Jimmy have managed to get in the picture above so here is a picture of Jim that I happened to take earlier this evening.

The picture was taken before the game - it must have been written in the stars, Jim!

As you can see from the first picture, Ernest seems to be presenting Richard with his score card, and that, m'lud, is the case for the defence in not having the scores published tonight.

All I can add is that the winning margin was described (I think by Richard) as umpteen.

Final League Positions - Fraser Cup

A 14 - 2 win for Peter Reynolds team last night brought them within one point of Robert Boyd's team, who only managed to draw their last game.

Actually, there's more to the story than that  The highlight should be that Richard Morrison's team scored four shots at the last end to peel the game at 6 shots all.

Congratulations therefore go to Robert and his team of Bob Cherry, Anne Hay and Peter Galloway.

If Robert had been there last night there would have been a photo of the winning rink, but that will have to wait a week.

In the other game David Gray came from behind (again) to win by 8 shots to 3 against Ernest  Mutter.

The final positions are here.

Robert Boyd's team wins the Fraser Cup

Robert Boyd's team of Bob Cherry, Anne Hay and Peter Galloway beat Peter Kennedy's rink by 12 shots to 2 and now cannot be caught in the Fraser Cup.

Although Peter Reynolds won a tight game against David Gray by 8 shots to 6 to stay just 2 points behind Robert, he would need to win and score 12 more ends in the final league game to take the trophy. Even Peter would not manage that!

The third game was a victory for Ernest Mutter's team over Richard Morrison.

The league table is here

A reminder that next week's game is at 8.45, but the week after that is the Drew Duncan Quaich at 5.00 pm.

Title still up for grabs!

With two weeks remaining, Robert Boyd's team and Peter Reynold's team are both still in the hunt to win the league.

Robert had a 6-3 win over Ernest Mutter last night, while Euan Lawrence had a close game against Richard Morrison.  A four at the 6th end made the difference in an 8-5 win. All to play for.

The other game saw David Gray's team go 5 down after two ends but they fought back to win by 10 shots to 5.

The league table is here.

Two teams beginning to stretch away!

The main winners tonight were the teams skipped by Robert Boyd and Peter Reynolds.  Robert beat David Gray's team by 9 shots to 3 and Peter had a victory by 12 shots to 2 against Ernest Mutter's rink.

As a result, Robert now leads the Fraser Cup Table with 11 points and Peter is in second place with 9.

The other winner tonight was Jimmy Niblock, who skipped Richard Morrison's rink to a 6-4 victory over Peter Kennedy.  This result lets Richard join the teams in joint 3rd place with 6 points.

Week 6 - Fraser Cup

How things can change. The two winners tonight were Peter Kennedy and Richard Morrison- the teams previously sitting in positions 5 and 6 in the league.
Last week's fourth placed team was Peter Reynolds and he drew 6 shots all with Robert Boyd.

Robert's team still lead the league with 9 points but everyone seems to be a wee bit closer tonight.

The table is here.

Fraser Cup - Halfway Stage

Five games played, five still to play and leading the way is Robert Boyd with 8 points out of 10. Tonight he had a good victory over Richard Morrison, winning by 12 shots to 3.

Peter Reynolds and Peter Kennedy had a close game, with Peter Kennedy being 4-3 up after 5 ends. However,  Peter Reynolds took a three and stole a three to win by 9 shots to 4.

Also having a close game were David Gray and Ernest Mutter. Ernest played a great stone with his last to lie game, but David, trailing by one shot at the final end, also played a great last stone to take out Ernest's for a two and the win.

So Robert has 8 points, but three teams are only two behind on 6 points. The second half promises to be exciting!

Eglinton Jug, Province Knock Out and Week 4 games

Last week was Jug Week. The competition has been played since 1851 and this year the Gangrels were represented by two teams.

Firstly, lets hear from Ernest, who has given this report on Team A

"Rink A skipped by Euan Lawrence with Jimmy Begg, Ernest Mutter and Francis McCrossin successfully progressed to the last 16 on Thursday morning after defeating an Ayr and Alloway rink. The Thursday match was played on the fastest ice any on the players could remember with virtually no sweeping involved. Unfortunately our opponents were the Fairywell rink skipped by Sean Rennie with Liam Scott, George McNaughton and Eilene Rennie. It appeared as if the combined age of the 3 youngest members of that team was less than the single age of  a couple of our rink. For this game Donald Cattanach replaced Francis.

Unfortunately age and experience was out-weighed by ability and hands were shaken after 7 ends with the Gangrels coming second. Fairywell lost in the quarter finals after going into the last end with a 2 shot lead and losing a three."

Rink B was skipped by Ronnie Peat, with Peter Galloway, Jim Dunlop and Ken Ross. Our first game was against Auchenames  and we had a convincing 13-2 victory.  Ken then departed and left the task of leading in the capable hands of Steell McFadzean.

Our first game on Thursday was a hard fought victory over Gemmell Jack's Dundonald team.  Every end was tight but we eventually won 7-1.

The quarter finals were later that day, against Stewarton Heather, skipped by Craig Reid.  This was the hardest test so far. We fought well and kept close to the hard hitting S H  team. One shot behind at the last end seemed not a bad position, but somehow our skip failed to draw the button to force an extra end. It really was quite a difficult shot - honest!

All the Jug results can be found here.

Finally, another report from Ernest. This time of the excellent performance in the Province Knock Out.

"Having won in earlier rounds against Dalmellington and Ayr and Alloway the Gangrels rink of Ernest, Jimmy Begg, David Hope and Jim Dunlop met Crosshill (Robert Ireland, Bert Andrew, Russell Boyd and Alex Connell) in the final. Gangrels got off to a good start stealing a 2 in the first end.

After 7 ends the match was tied at 5 all with Gangrels having won 4 ends, including the seventh leaving Crosshill with the hammer in the last end. With the final stone of each skip to be played Crosshill were lying shot with Gangrels having 2 stones touching at the front of the house. Unfortunately Skip Ernest missed the take out leaving Crosshill the victors.

The finals are scheduled for Greenacres from 10 - 12 November."

Fraser Cup Week 4

Robert Boyd and Ernest Mutter continue to lead the way in this year's Fraser Cup. They each have 6 points from 4 games, winning tonight against Richard Morrison and Peter Kennedy respectively.
The other winner was Peter Reynolds who had a comprehensive 12-4 victory over David Gray.

The league table is here.

Fraser Cup - Week 3

Some interesting games tonight.  Ernest Mutter and Robert Boyd had a very close game, resolved only by a measure at the last end with Ernest winning by 5 shots to 4.

Robert Charters was skipping David Gray's team and was 7 shots up after three ends. However, Jimmy Begg fought back by scoring 7 shots in the next three ends. Robert held on to score two in the final end, winning 9-7.

Peter Reynolds also had a great start, leading by 8 shots to 2 after three ends. He didn't score again but held on to win 8-6.

The table can be found here.

Week 2 - The First Stone!

We were delighted to have Honorary President Jim Lyburn with us tonight to throw the opening stone. Also great to see that our President Ernest Mutter had returned from his trip to Hong Kong and said a few words of welcome to the assembled club.

Jim's stone was a foretaste of many this evening (certainly a few of mine) - looked spot on for much of its journey, but kept on going just a bit too far.

Top of the league after this evening's games are Robert Boyd's team with two wins so far. At the other end, Peter Reynolds has still to break his duck, while everyone else is somewhere in between.

The table is here.

First Games - New Season

The season started this evening at 8.45 pm, a time that precluded the traditional  Opening Stone Ceremony and meal after our game.  Panic not, however, the ceremony and meal will take place next Monday night, 9th October, when we revert to our usual times. Please be there for a prompt start.

The later timing did not spoil the quality of the games and there were wins for David Gray, Robert Boyd and Peter Kennedy. Peter obviously has decided this year to save his energy.  He managed to win by 11 shots to 6, despite only taking three of the seven ends played.

The league table is available by clicking here, or on the Fraser Cup tab, top right.

Frame Salver and AGM

Runaway winners in the Frame Salver were the rink skipped by New President Ernest Mutter, with David Gray, Bert McKay and Anne Hay.  A great start to his Presidential year!

Mind you, one of the other teams was handicapped when Peter Kennedy decided to use Richard Morrison's glasses and found eventually that they should have gone to Specsavers!

Full minutes of our AGM have now been published in the minutes page (on the right, or by clicking here), but the following excerpts will be of interest.

Our Club subscription will increase from £23 to £24. Members whose mother club is the Gangrels will, in addition, pay the current RCCC subscription.

Our preferred ice time will remain as 5.00 on Mondays and Peter will try to secure as many ice times as possible for that time.

The club would be happy to subsidise juniors to play as reserves. Secretary to investigate.

The committee will arrange a date for a club "Bring a friend to curling" session. Success of this very dependant on every member bringing along a friend.

Points Competition

Bob Cherry and Ronnie Peat tied with 20 points each at the top of the standings after a good points competition this evening. In third place was Euan Lawrence with 17 points.

The 13 players were split into two sections and we only played one stone in each direction so as to ensure all the disciplines were completed.

Bob and Ronnie will share the trophy.

Sincere thanks to Ken Ross, Ronnie Wilson, Peter Galloway and Jimmy Begg who expertly handled the scoring.

Robert Boyd wins Kirkbride Rosebowl - Day League D Report

Robert Boyd and his rink of Jimmy Niblock, Bert McKay and Jim Dunlop won the Kirkbride Rosebowl last night, beating Peter Galloway's rink by 7 shots to 6.

The losing skip has commented

"It was a hard fought game played in the best of Gangrels fashion with each end coming down to the Skips having to do something special to secure the end and in Robert's case that also won the competition!"

Congratulations are also due to Peter for qualifying for the Day League D Knock Out Final. Yesterday at lunchtime, along with Euan Lawrence, Richard Morrison and Donald Cattenach, they beat Troon Portland by 7 shots to 3.

The team have had an excellent year, winning 6 out of their 7 games in League D, thereby winning the League and gaining promotion to Division C next year. Congratulations to all for a magnificent performance.

Euan is Runner up in Masters

Congratulations to Euan Lawrence on finishing 2nd in the National Masters competition at Greenacres.
Euan was third to Gavin Hamilton and along with Robert Wilson and George McNaughton they won their section in the finals and then their semi final against Robin Aitken.
The final was a very close affair but they eventually lost out to the experienced Keith Prentice team.

Above you can see them being presented with their prizes by RCCC Ladies President Jan Howard.

Ken Ross wins President's Cup

Bob Cherry skipped Ken Ross's team, with Francis McCrossin and Euan Lawrence, last night in a hard fought game to finish their campaign for the President's Cup.

Needing only a point to win the trophy they played some good curling and finished at 5 shots all against Steel McFadzean who was skipping the Morrison Rink.

Peter Galloway beat Ernest Mutter by a narrow 4 shots to 3 and while he was thus level on points with Ken, he finished on 18 ends won against 24 for the trophy winners.

In the other game Jimmy Begg skipped the Reynolds rink to a 9-4 victory over Jimmy Niblock and the Boyd team.

The final table is here.

Only top three can win President's Cup

There were big wins last night for Ken Ross and Peter Galloway, who now take the top two positions in the league. Much closer was the game between Robert Boyd and Ernest Mutter, which was tied at 5 all in the last end.  Robert Charters just failed with his last stone, leaving Robert Boyd's team the victor.

Ken Ross is on 6 points, Peter Galloway on 5 and Robert Boyd on 4 and any one of the three could win next week , although Robert would need a lot of ends and the other two to lose. Richard Morrison is also on 4 points but doesn't have enough ends to compete.
The league table is here.

President's Cup Week 3

Peter Galloway and Peter Reynolds had a hard fought draw tonight, with a final score of 6 shots all.

Ken Ross's team beat Robert Boyd's by 6 shots to 3 and in the other game, Richard Morrison's team took 5 shots in the last two ends to beat Ernest Mutter by 7 shots to 6.

See the table here.

President's Cup Week 2

If you have a look at the table following tonight's games, which you can see here, you'll see that things are fairly close.

The three teams that lost last week won this week, and the three who won last week lost this week.

So the net result is that everyone has two points, having won one game and lost one game.

All to play for......

President's Cup

Tonight saw the first round of this year's President's Cup. This is the competition where Skips play as lead and everyone else moves up the rink.  To avoid complications I shall refer to the teams by their normal skip name and apologise to the thirds who really are the ones who count.

This year the competition is being  run as a league where the teams play 5 games against the others.
Tonight's games saw big wins for the Peter Reynolds, Robert Boyd and Ken Ross rinks over Richard Morrison, Peter Galloway and Ernest Mutter.

The table is here
