Week 3 Results, Ross Low team in Semis and Indoor Grand Match Results

Colin Naismith's team had a 9-5 victory over George Hay's team to take over top spot in the Fraser Cup. There also were victories for Ken Ross, Jim Dunlop and Peter Kennedy.

The current league table can be found here.

Congratulations are due to our Ross Low team of Ken Ross, Colin Naismith, Ernest Mutter and Danny Ross who qualified for the Ross Low Semi Finals.  These are being played at 12.00 noon this Thursday, with the final thereafter. (DV)

Last Saturday, two Gangrels teams represented the club in the Indoor Grand Match.  This is a game between the North of Scotland and the South. This was last played for in 2010 and the result this time was a resounding victory for the South by 2154 shots to 1928.

The Indoor Grand Match, of course, is only played because, for various reasons, including on occasion a lack of ice, the outdoor Grand Match hasn't taken to the ice since 1979 at the Lake of Menteith.

Gangrels 1 are pictured above with their opponents, The Loch Ness Curling Club. A report on the game is to be found on the Loch Ness website which is here.  Those of you with a nervous disposition should look away now, but if you look closely you'll see that the boys from the North had a great time, enjoyed their game and had some nice things to say about our team.  Take the rest with a pinch of salt - the Loch Ness Website is famous.

Gangrels 2 had to make their way to Forfar and had an excellent day.  We were up against Cawdor House CC, all the way from that well known part of the North called Bishopbriggs. A very friendly game ensued in which we played well and came out winners by 10 shots to 3.

While at Forfar we saw the trophy for the Outdoor Match.  This has been held by Edzell since 1979, when they were the highest shots up.

An impressive trophy.

Fraser Cup Week 2

Tonight was a special night in the history of Gangrels Curling Club. We were delighted that George Hay's wife Anne played her first game as a member of the club - the first for any lady in a Gangrels League game. We sincerely hope that she will be joined by more ladies in the future.
Certainly, she contributed fully to her team's winning performance by setting up every end expertly (I know because I was her opposite lead) and we hope that she enjoyed herself.

It also did wonders for George who played very well in a 10-3 victory over Ken Ross, and now is the only team on four points.  There were other wins for Colin Naismith and Francis McCrossin, while Jim Dunlop and Peter Kennedy shared the points.

The new league table is here.

Mixed Results in the Eglinton Jug

We had two teams competing in the Jug this week.

Our A team were beaten in quite a close game against Fairywell in Round 1. The B team however performed with great distinction by reaching the quarter finals.

The team was skipped by David Gray with Peter Galloway, Steell McFadzean and Jim Dunlop. They beat Ayr & Alloway by 7 shots to 5 in Round 1 and followed that with a very impressive victory over Galston, also by 7 shots to 5. David played a great shot to turn round a potential 4 shot loss at the final end into 2 shots and victory.

Unfortunately the run came to an end in the Quarters where they came up against a rampant Stewarton Heather team.

Congratulations are due for a first rate performance.

All the results can be found here and a report on the final here. As a matter of great interest, our two rinks were beaten by the two finalists.

Opening Day, Season 2015 - 16

President Francis McCrossin welcomed us all to our new season and we had our usual gathering on the ice at the start of the first game.

Unfortunately, our Honorary President is not well at the moment, so we were pleased that Alistar was able to deputise most handsomely for his father. We hope Jim makes a full recovery and will be back in charge next season.

And then it was time for some curling. It's good that we are back to 8 rinks, so the full club will be out most Mondays.  Yesterday there were wins for George Hay, Peter Galloway and Ken Ross, while Francis and Colin Naismith had an honourable draw.

The league table can be found here or by clicking on the Fraser Cup link, top right on the page.

Hazel provided us with an excellent meal. after which Francis welcomed all our new members. He advised us that because of the pressure on substitutes caused by illness, the committee have suspended for this season the three shot penalty for only having three players.  Evert effort should continue to be made to arrange for subs, however.

There will be a Strategy Seminar after next Mondays game and everyone is encouraged to attend.

Colin Naismith followed up on the AGM proposal that we get more involved with the Disnae Club, and advised that every team should provide at least one member to help them during the season. Skips to advise Colin asap.
